The Big Trim router flattening sled assembly and use
This is an updated and larger version of my popular trim router flattening jig! This version is 24" wide and will flatten pieces up to 21" wide with your compact trim router. The new version comes with 2 additional risers to increase the depth of material that can be flattened, up to 2" with the included pieces, but the design allows you to use standard 1/4 -20 screws or bolts to increase the size to whatever you need.
The piece slides on your table top and is perfect for flattening end grain cutting boards, small boards and slabs, and cleaning up ep...

Hidden hinges using the Festool Domino DF500
As a welder who worked in machine shops, I have never seen anyone "warm up" the head on a CNC machine. This must be a weird head
@@roydunn4649 it’s what you’re SUPPOSED to do, but not everyone does
@@NewmanSpecialsWoodwork I figured something like that. It's typical in production shops to cut corners. But also those CNC's are way way more expensive and it may not hurt them as fast.
Same can be said for most power tools. There’s a cheaper alternative but the trade off is that it’s more labor intensive.
@@superwavess I think a lot of those are actually essential shop tools though
The "weird L shaped" blade is typical of the Stanley models, and they work fine, but this is a much more humane design.
@@MichaelCampbell01 it’s definitely a lot easier to sharpen. I honestly really like the way this feels in your hands as it’s going through the wood too.
Do you have plans for this flattener
@@bobbydelaura at this point, I do not. I’m supposed to be writing a book about routers and the plan for this is going to be in it so part of my contract was not to sell plans for it.
I don't care how smooth the wood is. You forgot to mention which direction the screw turns loosen the blade.
@@GregEpkes 😂 Fair point!
It is specially with tables because with hand sanding you will never get it to be as flat
@@user-io2hh2qc7t I can see that.
You could say that about almost every tool if you want to point out the tool being a faster option. But I’ll say an obvious choice the saw.
@@Redroom66 the thing is that I see it as a game changer for speed, just not for my actual shop work. The Domino is a working game changer
I need one of those 😅
@@Abit.ofeverything26 it’s pretty nice
Inaceptable eso de Dewalt 😮
Thank you! I was about to sand and paint started peeling, was so sad I spent so much on this furniture and waited years to buy
@@Jenvlogs404 just be careful with the finish that is already on there - I’m not sure how it will affect that!
Very nice 👌 👌 I like the idea of how you made the adjustable height jig. By using spacers of different thickness and bolts of corresponding length, you can accommodate boards of any thickness. Very creative!
@@VivekK-oz9ny thank you! I was trying to come up with an easy method could be easily implemented and adjusted - it took a little while to make it simple enough!!
Super bad ass
@@dennyclark8117 it’s so cool!
Very nice
@@GreenSaxon thanks! I love it!

@@robertschaeffer5861 definitely another name for it. Old woman’s tooth too
The router plane when needed is the perfect tool and probably my favorite plane and you know I love my planes .
@@jgoodwin1598 you definitely do! It’s been fun to have at hand!
Do you have build plan for this?
Very awesome! If you don't mind me asking, want would something like that cost?
@@michaellocklear6592 $6-10k depending on who makes it!
@@NewmanSpecialsWoodwork Thanks!
What can I use instead of mineral spirits cause they’re banned in California?
@@wonderlucha actually, from what I have heard, lighter fluid will work!
@@NewmanSpecialsWoodwork what? Is this a joke? Lol.
@@wonderlucha it’s crazy! I’ve never tried it, but found out a while ago. That charcoal lighter fluid fluid and mineral spirits are essentially the same thing. Google it!
@@NewmanSpecialsWoodwork thanks. I rather not find out.
@@wonderlucha From Google: “Can lighter fluid be used in place of mineral spirits” Yes, charcoal lighter fluid can be used in place of mineral spirits because some charcoal lighter fluids are made of mineral spirits. Mineral spirits are a clear, colorless liquid with a kerosene-like odor that can be used for many purposes, including thinning paints, degreasing, and industrial cleaning. Charcoal lighter fluid is a flammable fluid that can be petroleum-based, like mineral spirits, or alcohol-based, like methanol or ethanol. It's used to start charcoal fires in grills and can be used with lump charcoal or briquettes
My miter is square when the blade is near the back of the machine. But when I extend the arm to its maximum range, it's crooked like crazy. Do I change anything? It's perfectly straight for small pieces but running wide beams through it is terrible
@@stevendrumt I would still check the calibration because it has to be off somewhere
@@NewmanSpecialsWoodwork I used my square to change it at its longest. Think it was off by less than a mill, but it's straight now. Thanks for the help!
@@stevendrumt glad to help!
You can easily do the same thing with a hand sander. It's a pain in the ass... So... you can't easily the same thing with hand sander.
I’m replicating this jig and just wanted to ask what length you’ve got for those thumb screws. Are they 1” or longer? All I can find in town are 1”, which won’t leave much to grab the threaded inserts.
@@mitchelljamesflowers5721 I buy them at 1.25” long
Great idea!!
@@danielreynolds9631 thanks! They wound up being so popular I started selling these jigs!
Amazing job brother 🙏
@@snoogcity thanks man! The upgrades are great!
Time saver not a game changer
@@NCwoodworking66 i agree
Congrats
@@atom999 thanks!
I built my own belt sander and worked it as a Joyner and cabinet maker for five years. My father bought a drum sander for his factory, alloying me time on it after hours. Thank god for a loving father.
@@markrowland1366 that’s great!
You can send it through a planer no problem at all, but this is also another solution if you don't have a planer 😉
What software do you use to make these sorts of designs?
@@miker8687 I used to use Easel, but switched to Carveco. Easel is a really simple program but has lots of limitations. Carveco is a much better product
Use wider chisel.
Yeah i wonder how the world still exists with everyone being so greedy and not wanting to do any hard labour. Such is the human race. Where or when will it all end. No end game.
Thanks for taking the time to show this. I am completely self-taught, and I went all in on buying all of the machines at once. One thing I have quickly found out is if you start tinkering with something before really going out of your way to learn everything about it, there’s a good chance you will break something or create more problems before before you even get to start playing with your new toys.
@@claydoughty7182 that’s actually one of the reasons I always suggest people buy harbor freight tools to start when they can. They are good enough to get the job done, cheap enough not to kill the bank, and you learn what works and what doesn’t and what is important to you!
Did you know the first electric car was 1901
@@erict9098 so I read your comment and thought it was earlier than that and googled it. Turns out the first electric car was in 1884!
@@NewmanSpecialsWoodwork so 1 worked on a 1917 Anderson electric. What did google say? Did it say why we couldn't proceed with that technology?
@@erict9098 that’s crazy that you worked on one that old! What was that like? And I assume that the electric wasn’t a really viable option for back then considering that most places didn’t even have electricity!

@@TechTokOffical I try to!
My favorite way of breaking down plywood is to have the guys at Home Depot or Lowe's do it for me on their giant panel saw - for free. You just need the pieces to be a little bigger than needed because their saws create tearout.
Wow! And I just bought a dewalt planer 🤣 should of waited. Its all good this is in the bucket list for sure! Good vid bro!
I also just bought one and im over here slapping my forehead 🙃 😅😂
Omg that glue up board jig is brilliant. I am stealing that for sure!
@@ericferraro6264 glad to help!
A jointer is used for making your lumber square, planer is not a jointer and should never be used as one. As the cutting head is not on the bottom where you can move the lumber across a machined flat surface, which is what you need in order to make the lumber square in the first place.
That’s frickin beautiful 🤩
@@mohammedalawdi7419 thanks! I actually have a bigger one that I need to show
Is that different kind of epoxy that you use for preventing color bleeding or the same as you use for pour? Can one use same epoxy + harden for both?
@@lukapavlesic7610 yes to the first question and no to the second. The first question - this is total boat penetrating epoxy. It is a thin, almost watery, epoxy that penetrates the pores and prevents the bleeding. Second - never mix hardeners! Every brand has a specific chemical mix for their different types of epoxies.
@@NewmanSpecialsWoodwork great thank you very much! I have seen epoxies for boats in hardware stores so will buy that one just for putting a layer against bleeding
@@lukapavlesic7610 that should work! I’d test it first, just to see if anything happens
Honestly this may be quicker than sending it through the planer anyway. No shimming or hot gluing to a sled and waiting for it to dry then sending through and flipping. No doubt it’s safer too, great little jig for flattening small pieces!
@@asoggyburger479 thanks! That’s my thought- and it’s easier to store!
Mutter castle joint of some kind..?
@@dannybolewski7440 that was my thought but the pieces don’t lock together. Maybe a sort of bridle joint?
If its a pain in the ass and takes forever, then you buy a piece of equipment that eliminates that issue It is a game changer, lmao.
That looks great
@@bradleytuckwell4881 thanks! It’s fun too!
